Self Development Classes

The School of Art, Bournville, offers a range of part-time day and evening courses to help you to develop your technical and creative skills guided by practicing artists and designers in well equipped studios and workshops.

Creative Craft Ceramics

The courses are for beginners and more experienced ceramicists and offer the opportunity to learn skills in traditional throwing and hand building as well as glazing and firing. There are opportunities to work both traditionally and in creative sculptural ways. The courses are tutored by practicing experienced ceramicists and access high quality facilities for throwing making  glazing and firing. You will be able to learn at your own pace in a friendly learning environment.  

Art Club

Emphasis is on the enjoyment of developing as an artist in the company of others. Expert tuition and guidance is available and there is an opportunity to explore media other than paining. You will be encouraged to discuss your work with other students and participate in exhibitions. You will need to have taken a Foundation Art and design course or equivalent before joining the Art Club.

Creative Techniques Figure Drawing and Painting

The course is for beginners and more experienced artists. The course explores the use of a variety of media and techniques in figure drawing. There are opportunities to work in traditionally and experimentally with the figure. The course is tutored by practicing artists in pleasant well-equipped studios. The atmosphere is informal with the chance to develop at your own pace.  

Life Drawing

Introduction is provided in a wide variety of media within the classic traditions of drawing the human figure from life. Reference is made to the work of many artists and you will be encouraged to discuss and try different approaches. Expert tuition and guidance is provided and you will have the opportunity to share your ideas with other enthusiasts.

Photography

This course will enable you to explore and become proficient in the skills of photography. Course content will include use of the camera, studio photography, portraiture, urban landscapes, new and traditional image processing and printing techniques.

An important part of the course is your enthusiasm to produce your own photographs, both in college and in your own time. You will research contemporary artists and photographers and relate that to your own pictures. During the course there will be an option to look at some elements of digital photography.

This course is suitable for both novices and students with more subject experience.
