BA (Hons) Visual Arts by Negotiated Study

The Visual Arts course is a broad, inter- disciplinary programme of study that you can individualise, through negotiation with teaching staff, to reflect your interests. The programme actively encourages students to identify appropriate ‘real world’ contexts for their practice and students are encouraged to make direct links to work in the creative industries through a combination of taught Professional Practice modules and experiential/work placements in appropriate professional contexts

Check out www.38-degrees.co.uk for this year's degree shows and more images at the show's BLOG!

Our staff have experience in a wide range of professional fields and learning is through a mixture of one to one guidance, group teaching and self-directed study. Practical work is supported and informed through cultural and contextual studies in the form of lectures, seminars and individual research. We also offer the chance to attend specialist lectures from professionals working in the creative-cultural industries including artists, designers and entrepreneurs

Graduates have gone on to careers in multimedia design, video production and film, event management, exhibition interpretation, fashion and styling, interior design, community and public art. Alternatively, graduates have continued into postgraduate study or postgraduate certificate in education leading to teaching.

Students are actively encouraged to organise and participate in a wide range of activities, and this includes a variety of professional experiences, including working in the community and organising events and exhibitions, such as the recent NB exhibition at Birmingham's renowned Custard Factory.

How to apply

Criteria for admissions

• A comprehensive portfolio of work

Plus one of the following:

• 240 tariff points at ‘A’ level
• A successful completion of a Foundation Course in Art and Design.
• A merit profile at BTEC National Diploma in a relevant subject.
• An international Baccalaureate with 28 points
• Equivalent qualifications and experience.

Candidates, applying through UCAS Routes A (W101) or B (E101), are required to attend an interview with a portfolio of artwork. Again, it is good idea to prepare well, as places are competitive. Take tutor advice in preparing the layout and ordering the portfolio so that it looks thorough, coherent and relevant to the course. Include sketchbooks/ notebooks/research books etc, as evidence of how you collect information and develop ideas. Rehearse both the questions that might be asked and ones you might want to ask yourself.

Visit the UCAS website, remember to quote the above reference codes.
